Caskets, candles and Fat White Vampires

The boutique is in one of the most picturesque places in the Quarter.
Behind the Cabildo, just off St. Peter, in the picturesque little alley nestled between the
Häagen-Dazs shop and Pirate's Alley, is the little jewel of a shop, the Boutique du
Vampyre.

We've been watching this shop grow from a sparsely inventoried spread on Orleans
Street to the current showcase nook, crammed with candles, art, books, jewelry, wines
and other items of interest to those exploring the vampire side of New Orleans. The tiny
courtyard, built around one of the young colony's original wells, is billed as the oldest in
the French Quarter.

Much of the shop's inventory is created by local artists and artisans. A sampling:

The small shop is crowded with goodies from the Dark Side.- Fortune candles -
Handmade in the shop in a variety of shapes, these candles contain pewter charms that
are revealed as the candle burns down.

- Bouquet du Vampyre - A rose-scented perfume created for the Boutique by New
Orleans' Hove Parfumeur, along with silver pendants to hold the scent.

- Vampire art - A selection of vampire-themed drawings, prints and originals from local
artists.

- Jewelry - From poison rings to gothic earrings, pendants and more.

- Wines & more - Five Vampire wines imported from Transylvania, vampire hot sauces
and energy drinks. (I've got a dose of "Vamp" energy drink in a cool black can with red
lettering - "For When the Sun Goes Down")

A cabinet of fortune candles, made at the shop. The shop, owned by Marita Jaeger, also
sponsors special events, including Full Moon Wine Tastings of the vampire wines. The
next is scheduled for Friday evening . . . future dates are April 24 and May 23. Details
on the site.

Rising vampire author Andrew Fox - author of the popular "Fat White Vampire Blues"
and the current sequel, "Bride of the Fat White Vampire," will return to the Boutique du
Vampyre on April 8 for readings from both books, as well as a book signing. (Official

If you're shopping for your Coven Ball outfit - Gargoyle's on Decatur is still your best
bet for everything from leather & spikes to Lestat wannabe, but if you're looking for
unique gifts, books or ambiance, put the Boutique du Vampyre on your list.
